LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN DESIGN

About

01 about

We provide residential and commercial landscape design to clients in the Perth metropolitan region and throughout regional WA.

Patrick studied Garden Design at the prestigious English Gardening School in Chelsea, under the tutelage of prominent English gardening doyen Rosemary Alexander. His postgraduate study in philosophy has focused on environmental aesthetics. He has completed further studies in horticulture and sustainability.

Patrick has worked with landscape designers on gardens at both the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. His landscape design work has included heritage restorations, contemporary residential garden designs, and large-format country gardens, which is best exemplified through his ongoing work at The Gardens at Bullimah.

Patrick’s outdoor spaces fuse timeless materials and classic styling with contemporary approaches to sustainable planting design. He keeps a keen eye on the leading international garden design movements, which continue to inform his work.

He is available for both residential and commercial projects.

Design Approach

03 Design Approach

Every garden design is unique and seeks to reflect both the prevailing site conditions and the requirements of the client.

We enjoy forming relationships with our clients, and listening is a critical part of this process. Real value is placed on clear and effective communication so that the landscape design process is an enjoyable one for all parties.

Our goal is to create a balanced and harmonious landscape that is consistent with the local vernacular, and this may include:

  • Any built form such as outbuildings and sheds, pergolas, glasshouses, bridges, walls and columns

  • Garden design components including timber, steel and stone elements

  • Gardens with water features, rills, pools, and large format ponds

  • Specifying or commissioning garden sculpture and artwork, urn and pot ornamentation, and outdoor furniture

  • Planting that places emphasis on beauty as well as ecological precepts such as habitat and sustainability, and adhere to the mantra of ‘right plant for right place’

Landscape design factors might include:

  • Making use of borrowed scenery

  • Spatial considerations such as mass and void and perspective

  • Understanding whether symmetry or asymmetry is required

  • Applying principles of contrast to juxtapose material selections so that key elements can be emphasised

  • Planting design fundamentals such as repetition, proximity and form

There are innumerable other landscape design factors and considerations that can help bring a landscape to life. By commissioning a professional garden designer you can ensure that your garden will be beautiful, meet the needs of its users, and flourish into the future.

1. Consultation

An on-site meeting with the client allows us to gain an understanding of the site conditions and prepare a brief based on the client’s requirements. The brief will form the basis for the eventual design. An objective study of the site is undertaken, which will usually include a survey, an analysis of the local climate and microclimates, the topography and orientation of the site, drainage and groundwater recharge, a soil analysis, a survey of existing vegetation, and appropriate research into relevant local planning requirements.

2. Concept

We will prepare a concept design based on the brief. This will usually be presented as an aerial plan with the proposed layout and 3-d details for key features in the landscape. A full three-dimensional CAD model, with photo-realistic images that will enable the client to properly visualise the future garden, can be prepared if required.

3. Detailed Drawings

Following agreement on the concept, we will prepare drawing documentation in sufficient detail for the landscape to be built and planted. The project will be fully costed to the requirements of the budget.

4. Project Coordination and Construction

We work closely with our preferred contractors, who are registered with Landscaping Industries Association WA (LIAWA)  to build your dream garden, and we are there every step of the way to ensure that the work is being carried out in complete accordance with the design. Alternatively, we will provide the construction drawings to your preferred contractor.

5. Ongoing Management

The maintenance aspect of your finished garden may be something you wish to take on yourself, or you may wish to use a garden maintenance contractor. We can assist in sourcing a reliable contractor if required. Importantly, we maintain a close relationship with our clients beyond the completion of the project, ensuring that any requisite information and advice is provided into the future.

Testimonials

05 testimonials

Patrick took great interest in understanding our lifestyle, design interests and the way in which we intended to utilise our yard, to produce a design that we were extremely happy with. Patrick was able to make elements of our landscaping design possible, that we had previously been told were not possible, due to his creative thinking and knowledge. His friendly and conscientious approach was consistent even after our landscaping was completed to ensure we were getting the most out of our new yard

C. Totaro/ Swanbourne, Perth WA

We would have never been able to produce such an amazing outcome had we tackled this ourselves. He nailed the brief as far as garden goes; colour, functionality, water saving solutions and design. Now we have an amazing front and back yard, perfect for entertaining and spending a large majority of our time- we love the overall result and that it is low maintenance. We also think its added additional appeal and value to the property. We have endless people stopping to admire our place and complimenting us on how good it looks, which is really gratifying. We loved working with Pat and 100% recommend him as we have done so already. Thanks Pat!
